Not bad for $7k....because c’mon, you’re gonna put in another $4500 to fix everything eventually. Might as well do it now.

Because E39. I have one (2002 520d) which is nice enough. I’ll assume yours has more horsepower as 520d was Euro only.
Unless it’s a 530i with bad head gasket, hit.
Easy upgrades and fixes to make it an amazing car, too. It likely has the original suspension, tie rod ends and suspension mounts. Replace all of those for under $500 ( rockauto.com is your friend ) and then replace the cloudy halogen headlights with $200 eBay direct-from-china Xenons to make it extra pretty. And budget for a replacement clutch, too. Also, replace the “struts” for the hood and tailgate and it becomes an amazing grocery getter and daily driver that handles well in the twists.

I can’t speak for everything around the motor, but the 2.8 is pretty reliable in my experience. My girlfriends dad has a 328i and didn’t get an oil change in - wait for it - three years. Engine just kept chugging. Hasn’t replaced anything but a t-stat and oxygen sensor I think. His is pre technical update and this one is post with dual VANOS so that might change things. This is also the engine platform my M3’s is based on and it’s been solid (the engine, everything else has needed work) the whole time I’ve owned it.

yup... May as well buy all the suspension bushings, and a handfull of sensors and plastic bits and bobs right away.

Also, new cooling system and all seals and rubber bits....

A running E39 manual wagon for $2,500? “BAD” is just German for “bath.”
FUCK DETAILS, GET WAGON

I forgot about the cooling system!! I shouldn’t have, I replaced mine just out of fear that it was going to fail. But yes, the seals hoses, and anything that gets brittle over time too.

I just know this because I was considering to buy an E39 540i not too long ago.
And not knowing much about these cars, I talked to people on Oppo who pointed this out. I love Opponauts :)

One thing that kind of scared me about the E39 was a simple comparison of Bentley manuals between the E34 and the E39. The E34 has one big book that covers everything, whereas the E39 has two that same size, with one of those two dedicated to just the electrical system:
Regardless, it won’t stop me from me from buying an E39 one of these days...

The E34 book is still a novel, however. And about 150 pages are wiring diagrams.

This looks good. Buy it.

Holy ow, what a painful experience. The window struts were a breeze, but getting that retaining clip back onto the main door struts? My fingers looked like claws that following next week.
Best $140 spent though ($20 window pair, $120 for pair of door struts).

$2500 is a good price. E39s are reliable (no really!) And if it has hit 200k+, it’s a long term runner. Do it

Mine has been very good to me. At least take it for a test drive.
